We were commissioned to complete three chalkboard menu art pieces for Insomnia Restaurant & Lounge located at 563 Bloor Street West in Toronto.

I documented the process by setting up a camera on a tripod and taking a picture every few minutes.

The below stop-animation video was put together with 200+ photographic stills.

Before I started chalking I set up a design document that outlined the measurements of the boards. I marked very faint lines that I knew I had to stay within.

All of the text was written freehand – although I did reference different fonts on my computer throughout the process.  My wrist and hand cramped a few times.

If you’re attempting to work with chalk I highly encourage a soundtrack of hip-hop. I couldn’t have finished these if it weren’t for Jay-Z and Kanye. “What more can I sayyyy?”

The process of completing these three boards took over 20+ hours over three days.

The boards were painted with black chalkboard paint.

This horizontal board had the same styling as the vertical ones (See images below) but was arranged in a different manor.
